Illinois requires roofing contractors to hold a state license under the Illinois Roofing Industry Licensing Act. Missouri has no equivalent statewide requirement. Because the Metro East shares a media market and a storm season with St. Louis, plenty of Missouri-based crews cross the river after a storm and knock doors in Belleville and Edwardsville without holding an Illinois license at all. Ask for the license number before anyone gets on a ladder. A legitimate contractor will hand it over without hesitating.
