The southern plains feed supercells straight into this corner of Missouri every spring, and hail is the defining roofing event in Greene County. It rarely punches through a shingle. It bruises the mat underneath and knocks the granule layer loose, exposing the asphalt to UV. From the driveway the roof looks completely ordinary. Two or three summers later the exposed asphalt dries out, cracks and leaks — long after the claim window on that storm has quietly closed. Granules collecting in your gutters after a storm are the clearest early warning anyone gets.
Springfield does not get a Minnesota winter, it gets something arguably harder on a roof: freezing rain.
